Name: Billy Vessels
College: Oklahoma Sooners
Winning Year: 1952 – 18th Award
Official Heisman Profile: Click Here
Interesting Notes: Vessels was a standout player on an entire team of football stars at Oklahoma…was a prolific passer and receiver but was most dangerous as a rusher…once averaged 11.5 yards per carry against a stingy Notre Dame defense en route to 195 yards and 3 touchdowns…played professional football for the Edmonton Eskimos (1953) and Baltimore Colts (1956), taking time off between to serve as an officer in the U.S. Army…was elected to the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame in 1974.
Featured Card: 1956 Topps #120. Playing one year in Canada and then serving in the army, coupled with the fact that football sets were just beginning to become an annual release, Vessels had to wait until his return to professional football (and his last season) to be featured on an official rookie card. Most copies of this vintage gem sell in the $20 ball park while some highly graded copies fetch $100-$200.
