Product Preview: Topps Chicle

Today, Topps unveiled a sneak peak at a new football product to be released this winter: 2009 Topps National Chicle Football. The set will feature all painted portraits of gridiron greats and will take design elements from the legendary 1935 National Chicle set, the first nationally distributed football card set in history.

Artists for the project include: Ken Branch, Jason Davies, Brett Farr, Chris Henderson, Don Higgins, Dave Hobrecht, Brian Kong, Mike Kupka, Paul Lempa, and Monty Sheldon.

This could be an interesting set, although I really question how much like 1935 National Chicle it will really be. They would have done better to stick with the smaller card size and much simpler backgrounds than the previewed example above. Then again, as Topps proved with the preview and ultimate release of Topps Chrome, much can change between now and the actual release date.

Stay tuned for more updates as they become available!

On a side note, is it just me, or is Mark Sanchez getting all the love so far for this year’s rookie class?

  1. Dave says:

Looks great to me! I like the idea of a set composed of all painted portraits. Sanchez could be a HUGE focus of the hobby this year – not only is he off to a great start, but he plays in the largest media market in the country. He makes the Jets a much more fun team to watch, that’s for sure.
